Menehune

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai‘i, will feature multiple pools – swimming, play and relaxation options for every member of the family.

And the mysterious little people of the islands, the Menehune, have left a very special water play area for younger children. According to island tradition, the Menehune are master builders, capable of mighty feats of construction overnight. They are shy, however, and to avoid discovery, they sometimes have to leave their work unfinished.

One such work is Menehune Bridge, the children’s interactive water play area at Aulani. Menehune Bridge features three slides, interactive water elements and a climbing play structure. For some young Aulani guests, it will serve as an introduction to the Menehune, who can also be discovered hidden throughout the Resort.

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai‘i, will welcome its first guests on August 29, 2011. Upon its completion, the Resort will feature 359 traditional hotel rooms and 481 two-bedroom equivalent Disney Vacation Club villas in two towers, an 18,000-square-foot spa, two restaurants, a kids’ club, a wedding lawn, a conference center and the themed pool areas, including not only Menehune Bridge but an adult pool, tube slides into Waikolohe Stream, sunset-facing hot tubs and a snorkel lagoon.

Laniwai

The spa at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, has a new name: Laniwai, meaning “freshwater heaven.” As we met with our Hawaiian cultural consultants to examine the spa and some of its unique qualities, the focus on Hawaiian connection to and reverence for nature inspired some new thinking about the spa name. The name Laniwai embraces the cultural and spiritual significance of rainbows: a magical phenomenon occurring when Ua (rain) and sunshine combine. The rainbow symbolizes joy, life, growth, greenery and good fortune.

Here’s Lucia Rodriguez, Spa Director of Aulani, describing how you’ll be immersed in the magical Laniwai spa experience from the moment you enter.

As Lucia says, Laniwai will have something for everyone…a “rainbow” of experiences: 15 treatment rooms including a couples room and a flex-room for 2 or more (perfect for a family spa experience), a salon with stations for manicure, pedicure, hair and makeup, a fitness center and the only outdoor hydrotherapy circuit in Hawai‘i. For teens there is Painted Sky, a teen spa with a yogurt bar, computer access and mixology station.

Behind the Magic at Aulani with Samantha Brown

Many of our clients have asked for some more information about Aulani, Disney’s newest resort located on Oahu, Hawaii. Well, now we will get it. Disney recently sent the travel guru with our “Disney Traveler” camera crew to the island of O‘ahu to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai‘i.

The online show, scheduled to air May 17-21,2011, explores this highly anticipated resort and reveals special Disney Vacation Club offers available exclusively through the webcast. Mo‘olelo Beachside Fire Pit Storytelling at Aulani

With the Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa fire pit storytelling location still under construction, how appropriate is it that Aulani Entertainment Executive Producer Sayre Wiseman has to convey the experience through … well … storytelling?

Around The Circle of ‘Alae ‘Ula (named for the water bird that, in Hawaiian mythology, brought fire to humans) Uncle, Aulani Resort’s Hawaiian Elder, will share stories and songs drawn from traditional Hawaiian culture. Mo‘olelo, as the experience is called, is a Hawaiian word for the storytelling tradition, and Aulani guests will be encouraged to sing along as Uncle strums on his ukulele and teaches Hawaiian lyrics to songs that support his stories.

The stories will range from tales of romance and adventure to the rascally antics of the legendary little Menehune. Sayre and the Aulani Entertainment team are developing a diverse program of activities specially tailored for various guest age groups – adults, teens and youth – as well as experiences like Mo‘olelo storytelling designed for the entire family.

Pu‘u Kino at Aulani

Located at Disney’s Aulani resort in Hawawi, Pu‘u Kino is the lava outcropping which is probably the most imposing and eye-catching landmark in the Waikolohe Valley recreation and activity area of the Resort. Pu‘u Kino will offer two different adventures down thrilling water slides. One slide will plunge tube-riding guests into a water course through misty caverns. The other is a body slide that will drop them directly into the crystalline waters of the 8,200-square-foot Waikolohe Pool.

Along the way, you may spot “hidden faces in the lava” (which is what Pu‘u Kino means in Hawaiian). Very reminiscent of the Tree of Life in Animal Kingdom park.

Waikolohe Valley at Aulani

Welcome to Waikolohe Valley the central area of Disney’s newest resort, Aulani.

In the foreground you can spot Menehune Bridge, possibly the handiwork of the Islands’ legendary little people. When completed, it will be a 2,200-square-foot, interactive water play area for children.

Further in the background is one of the great landmarks of Waikolohe Valley, Pu‘u Kino. It means “hidden faces in the lava” and if you look closely, you may already be able to detect a few of the hidden images. Pu‘u Kino will be, among other things, the home of two water slides and a gateway to floating down Waikolohe Stream.

Between Pu‘u Kino and Menehune Bridge you can spot workers in Rainbow Reef, which will become a snorkeling experience where Aulani guests can have up-close encounters with an array of live marine life.

Below, is a great overview of the construction of the Waikolohe Valley!

Progress at Aulani

I love this photo because I think it gives you a great feeling for the beauty of the location as well as a sense of what the Resort will look like when it’s completed. Aulani, as you know, is the new Disney resort being built on the West coast of Oahu in Hawaii. In the middle of the central courtyard you can see and unusual grey structure that will become the lava outcropping, part of the big water play area at Aulani. The low white building taking shape to the upper left of that, down by the beach, will be the Resort’s signature `Ama `Ama restaurant.

Another part of the special Aulani guest experience will be the interior “look” of the Resort, brought to life by the many pieces of art and décor created by local artists. Fun, joyous, unexpected pieces – modern, historic, traditional and abstract – are being created by a diverse array of remarkable creative talents. In this video, some of them speak about how unusual and exciting the Aulani approach will be.
